I can't believe I haven't blogged about this yet. Kdenlive is a program I have been using for around two weeks now, and I have to say, it is amazing in terms of video editing under Linux. For all of those people that have tried video editing under linux, say with Kino or Cinerella, and have failed in an epic manner, you may just want to have another look at Kdenlive (works under Gnome as well, of course). It is what you expect from a video editor.
It looks a bit like just about every other video editor out there, for Windows. It has a similar interface to Windows Movie Maker, without the suckage, and is just as powerful, if not more powerful, than iMovie for the Mac. It is non-linear. You can have multiple tracks. You can split and delete parts of tracks. You can do anything you would expect from a good video editor.

The first UbuntuOS video: A walkthrough of the new Ubuntu Netbook Remix with Joshua Henderson. This is the first of many planned videos in an attempt to expand UbuntuOS into different areas, and make it the best possible Ubuntu resource on the planet! See the video after the break (on Google Video or downloable).

Netbook huh? Well, I guess we can live with that name, and it does shorten it from Miniture-Sub-Notebook, or whatever those Eee PC like (and inclusive) laptps are being called. Though this is a version of Ubuntu that is designed specificately for these types of computers, and, well, lets say the new interface is up to a personal opinion.
Personally, I think it is a good idea to have a more standard operating system for these new sub-notebooks (relatively new... did you see them around in 2006?). Every manufacturer trying to make their own distrobutions for their version isn't the best idea that has ever happened: especially when the company is used to making hardware, and hardware only. If this new Ubuntu Remix went onto many platforms, more work can be put into building the hardware and improving them, and more work can be focused on a single operating system for these machines.

This is a feature of Ubuntu (and other Debian based distrobutions) that I have known for some time, not too long, but not just the other week. It is called Apt URL, and basically it allows webmasters to link to application installs: the user can click the link, and if it is in a repository on the users system, it will install the program. No need to search, just click and install (reminds me of the Click and Run scheme, just more awesome).

Gnome Do is the easy way to get things done on your Gnome (and KDE) desktop. It is basically a quick launcher. Just press a key combination (by default: super + space), and up pops a box and you can start typing what you want. Launch a program, pause your play list, get the latest stock quotes from Google. Nice and customisable to suit your needs, and is very handy once you get used to using it.

Wine, version 1.0, is nearly here. Only took 15 years, but as some say, it is good to let wine mature. Currently, Wine 1.0 Release Candidate 3 is avaliable for everyone, and can easily be installed into Ubuntu by adding the correct repository. Wine 1.0 will be released June 6, 2008 if it is ready by then, nearly exactly 15 years after the first hint of Wine's creation was made.

While we were away, I learnt how to build computers from parts. I built my own high-end workstation plus a low-end machine for a friend, both running Ubuntu perfectly. What do you need to know to build an Ubuntu-compatible computer?

Winner of the 2008 longest game name title comes... On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One from Penny Arcade Adventures and Hot Head Games. Whilst I am not a game reviewer on my day to day life, I have taken a tangent in my normal life just for this particular game, a game that has... a native Linux client.

I don't want to write up a long description about it, but I will say: sorry it has taken nearly 2 months to release this episode (you will notice how old it is when you listen to it), and: This time, we are back for good (I really need to live up to my words this time).

It may seem trivial... downloading YouTube videos, but I haven't seen an application that does it better than PyTube. And not only does it download videos, it will convert them to your prefered format as well. Yet, it isn't restricted to just YouTube videos... use it just to convert between local video files (want to conver from avi to theora? How about wmv to avi? It can do that!
